Be Optimistic About Kevin Gausman

When you first look at new Brave Kevin Gausman’s stats, the thing that stands out is only 2.32 BB/9 in 2018 and a 2.71 BB/9 for his career.  Aside from that and the impressive innings totals since the 2016 season, his stats look rather ordinary.

But, Gausman is getting out of the tough American League East, he’s getting out of one of the easiest ballparks in which to hit homeruns, and he’ll play for a better defensive team.  Another sign of optimism for Gausman is the Braves seem to be good at getting analytics info to their players.

Before you look at Gausman’s stats and think this is wishful thinking, consider what he has to work with.  The Orioles picked him 4th overall out of LSU in 2012.  He was a highly-touted prospect right away, ranking in the top 40 in all of baseball in all the preseason prospect rankings in both 2013 and 2014.  Baseball Prospectus had him as high as #13 in 2013 and #10 in 2014.  He’s a high draft pick of whom the industry thought highly of, but who hasn’t lived up to his prospect pedigree as a major leaguer.

Nothing his guaranteed but Gausman is a pitcher who came into pro ball and the majors with the right foundation and who is moving to a more favorable situation in every way imaginable.  He’s not the biggest name traded at this year’s deadline but it would not be at all shocking if he provided the most value for the cost.
