Is it just me, or does it seem like spring training has been going on since New Year’s Day? The inclusion of the World Baseball Classic just made the preseason feel so much longer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy baseball is back. I can’t wait for Opening Day…and that’s the problem.
Thankfully, the wait is almost over and my pre-pubescent level of patience will soon be abated. Sunday, we get to see our Atlanta Braves take on the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. Yes, indeed, that was a sour sentence to write, full of both excitement and bitterness. As much as I hate the Mets, at least they can be counted on to flop as the season draws to a close. (At least, I hope that has become a tradition…) However, the idea of recognizing the Phillies as World Series winners just makes me cringe.
I hate the Phillies. Hate them. I hate that they won last year, I hate that they turned the Braves into their personal whipping boys last year. God, remember that one game when Kelly Johnson dropped that routine pop-up that would have won the game for us, but instead lead to another one-run loss? That irritates me even now…Oh, I also hate that it seems like every time we play the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN, they make us look like fools. Add to that the fact that this year, we get to listen to Jon “I Pronounce Names Funny Because I Have Nothing Of Interest To Add” Miller and Joe “Ramblin’ Man” Morgan fawn over the defending champions, and we have the potential for a very trying night.
And yet, I can’t wait for it- because baseball is back for 2009. After such an up-and-down winter, otherwise known as “The Offseason of Oopsies and Uh-Ohs!”, the Atlanta Braves are ready to take the field, and I can’t imagine a better way to kick off the 2009 campaign than by shoving the championship trophy down the throats of the Phillies on national television. Let’s get this thing moving, people! Let’s go!
