    Walker Says:

Jason Heyward came off very unlikable in the interview, How was that question irrelevant. Answer the simple question. Very surprised.

    Curt Says:

So the stat I threw out there was off about Lowe, but it still isn’t great. Braves have won 6 of his last 17 starts.

  3. 3
    Steve Says:

    6 of 17? C’mon, Curt – that’s a whopping 35%. I don’t know what you were complaining about.

  4. 4
    Steve Says:

Walker – it was weird, no doubt. I really almost laughed following his response to my question about his thumb. For what it’s worth, he comes off as a totally different guy when you see him interacting with his teammates and front office people. He’s joking, loose, affable. Seems to me he’s made a strong decision about how he’s going to talk with the media and he doesn’t waver from it – at all. Not defending him one way or another, just adding some more observations.

    Ham Says:

It’s funny – I wonder if he thinks that he is coming off as professional, when in reality he seems less than professional and a little arrogant. I’ll give him a pass in his rookie season, but it will be interesting to see how he matures in terms of talking with the media.

    Nate Says:

Great show guys. IMO, part of Lowe’s recent struggles, aside from not having very good control, have been caused by him pitching after Hudson in the rotation. The Marlins’ announcers sold me on that POV as their team was crushing Lowe after being dominated the previous night by Tim Hudson (I think it was the last time the 2 teams played in ATL). Lowe, a mediocre sinker ball pitcher, is easier to hit after a team has dealt with Hudson, a very good sinker ball pitcher. He should put JJ or Tommy in between Lowe and Hudson. This is also the same manager who thought McOut would somehow be a better fit in CF yesterday because he’s used to play in PNC Park. Anyone else remember McOut’s series in PNC in May? He got like 1 hit in 3 games. He sucks everywhere. Comfort is not the issue. Being terrible at baseball while receiving waaaaaaay to much playing time is the issue.

    Mara Wanna Says:

Hammy, freaking love the “Frenchy hugging in laws” comment (not that you’ll ever read this). I found J- Hey’s interview a bit touchy. It surprised me. Steve, did he seem touchy? Great show. My hope meter is a 6. We HAVE to win the next two i know the Cards have been scuffling but they still make me nervous. Excited to listen to Michael’s interview now…

  8. 8
    Mara Wanna Says:

Oops…disregard my Heyward comment. Didn’t catch up before I posted.

  9. 9
    Mara Wanna Says:

    Love the organ dude.

  10. 10
    Steve Says:

Mara – if there’d been a comma after the word organ, your comment would have been banned.

  11. 11
    Walker Says:

Yeah he seemed arrogant but his attitude should improve over the years. Anyway, I believe the braves will go to the playoffs, however I am most worried about the NLDS. The braves have struggled there lately going to a lot of game 5′s. I still don’t understand why MLB wont change that round to a 7 game series. Baseball is a game in which a lot of luck is involved. A 7 game series is the best way to show who the best team really is. That really bothers me. I feel like I can breathe if the braves make it to the NLCS. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

    NBA- the best team wins
    NFL- the hottest team wins
    MLB- the luckiest team wins

  12. 12
    Mara Wanna Says:

    HAH!!!!!!

  13. 13
    Mara Wanna Says:

For the record, you can’t ban royalty. Right Cledus? CLEDUS!!!!!

  14. 14
    Nate Says:

#10 made my day. Thanks, Steve.

  15. 15
    Mara Wanna Says:

Plus, I’m sure he does have a nice organ. You tell us Steve, you saw it right?

  16. 16
    Wade Says:

Why why why why why is Nate McClouth playing, at all? And why is KK playing, at all? We couldn’t bring up any other players and leave these two folks rotting away in Gwinett? For the love.

  17. 17
    Nate Says:

Wade, I agree with everything. There had to be 2 players on Gwinett’s team having better years than KK and McOut. I would have much rather seen 2 guys get a shot at producing than see KK and McOut continue to struggle. KK just looked awful. Throwing 89 up in the zone is not good, and his location has been an issue for 2 seasons now. He does randomly have a great game every once in a while, but he’s much more likely to have stinker. Same goes for McOut. I think the guys are on to something. McOut must have some incriminating evidence on Bobby or something. Otherwise, Bobby’s just a bad manager….

  18. 18
    Mara Wanna Says:

    Braves lineup: 1. Infante 2B, 2. Heyward RF, 3. Prado 3B, 4. McCann C, 5. Lee 1B, 6. Cabrera LF, 7. Gonzalez SS, 8. Ankiel CF, 9. Hudson P

Only Mac in the lineup is our all star.

  19. 19
    Steve Says:

Wouldn’t you rather Diaz and Melky as opposed to Melky and Ankiel? I know it’s a righty and you can’t possibly put Ankiel in for any more lefties, but c’mon, it’s time for Matty everyday.

  20. 20
    Nate Says:

I don’t know if I’m completely sold on Diaz playing everyday? Then again, he might sell me on it if given the opportunity. He hustles and plays hard. I’ve never said to myself, “I don’t think Matty is completely focused or giving his all.” There are many players on our team that I constantly wonder about, especially when they’re playing on the road. When I went to the finale in the Mets series I felt like I got cheated. From the first inning the energy level was flat. It might be time for somebody like McCann or Hinske to light a fire under some of the guys and remind them what they’re playing for. Lately, the guys seem to be playing like they’d rather be hunting, fishing, or doing whatever in October rather than playing ball.

  21. 21
    Anne Says:

“Mara” – well, he allegedly has a WORKING organ: his wife just had a baby.

Steve, it IS time for Matty every day. Every day gets his groove on. His baseball groove, that is.

  22. 22
    Nate Says:

Rick Ankiel, the second coming of Jordan Schafer. 39 K’s in 84 AB’s. Yikes.

  23. 23
    Nate Says:

    2-1 Fish.

  24. 24
    Nate Says:

    Just hopeless…

  25. 25
    Nate Says:

Was anyone else thinking, “well, here comes the DP”. It’s like the Braves have conditioned me to feel disappointed before it even happens.

  26. 26
    Steve Says:

That was just awful, Derrek Lee. Just awful. How depressing that at-bat was.

  27. 27
    Nate Says:

Yeah, what pitch was he looking for in that AB? He took 2 very hittable fastballs (pretty much right down the middle) to get into that 0-2 hole.

  28. 28
    Nate Says:

    4-3 Phils.

  29. 29
    Nate Says:

Ankiel now 0-8 w/ 8K’s on this road trip. I don’t know if a pitcher could pull that off in 8 AB’s. Oh wait…

  30. 30
    Steve Says:

3 runs. I’m stunned. The team doesn’t look capable of anything right now. Depressing.

  31. 31
    Nate Says:

    My playoff hope meter broke.

  32. 32
    Steve Says:

Are the struggling Braves losing confidence yet?

  33. 33
    Curt Says:

    I smell 2nd place

  34. 34
    Mara Wanna Says:

Any chance the Bravos get to play the 9th?

  35. 35
    Steve Says:

    Mara – unfortunately, yes.

  36. 36
    Mara Wanna Says:

I hate baseball. Losing is NOT fun.

  37. 37
    Nate Says:

    Second place.

  38. 38
    Anne Says:

Hope Meter = 2. There is no way I’m buying post season tickets right now. The Pirates!!!?????!!! Disgusted.

  39. 39
    Nate Says:

Yeah, losing a series to the first team in the NL to officially be eliminated from the playoffs is pretty bad. The Pirates starters were like 25-76 before this series.

  40. 40
    Curt Says:

They both have had ERAs over 5.25. The guy yesterday has spent the season in AAA and only started when another guy got hurt. Andrew Miller, the FL starter on Friday, had a +5 ERA in AA this season. Only got called up because he is former high round draft choice and is making a ton of money. it’s embarrassing. a world class choke job. and if the braves don’t have homefield throughout the playoffs, forget it.

  41. 41
    Mara Wanna Says:

It feels like the end of the season. I’m sitting here trying to feel better by thinking what a fun season it’s been. It’s like there is no wild card. There aren’t 4 weeks left to play ball. Road trip of sucktitude.

  42. 42
    Bub Says:

Holy crap. I’ve never been so happy to be otherwise occupied. I think I hate the Braves right now. Pittsburgh Pirates. A team that was illiminated in August.

  43. 43
    Bub Says:

    illiminated?

Got your English major right here, yo. 8)

  44. 44
    Curt Says:

The mind is a terrible thing to waste on following the Braves

  45. 45
    Bub Says:

Ugh. I fastforwarded (sorry, must go to bed) to Jason’s interview. It’s a really beautiful feeling to follow falling into 2nd place by hearing your future star make an ass of himself. Being defensive about the thumb is beyond stupid.

A sh*t week to be a Braves fan.

  46. 46
    Danny Says:

    this is how I feel.

  47. 47
    Mara Wanna Says:

Did anybody say anything brilliant after the game to DOB? I don’t have the heart to look. It’s called avoidance behavior.

  48. 48
    Jimbo! Says:

when you look through our lineup it doesn’t look like we should be completely awful offensively like we are, idk what it is except that we leave runners on base every chance we get thats how it was at the pittsburg game I went to the other night anyways.
    whats the deal, anyone??

  49. 49
    Steve Says:

1st, left and center are total black holes right now. And we’re getting no timely hitting from anyone else. The timely hits covered up those holes for weeks and weeks but without that, the team can’t score.

I rescind what I said on the show Sunday about Derrek Lee. That at-bat last night with the bases loaded killed all my optimism about him. It’s time to give Freddie a try. At least for a while. See if he can hit, see if he can hit lefties. Something’s got to change. And yes, I’m being totally reactionary.

  50. 50
    Trey` Says:

Heyward has to be the worst interview on the team. He only sticks to the script (except when he’s explaining to his fans that the condition of his hand in September is irelevant) – having fun, team wins blah blah blah.

Chip Caray is a certified jinx. The man has to go! Not 2 minutes after he praised Huddy for blanking the Pirates we were down 3 runs. I don’t recall what game it was this year but Glavine got on him about jinxing the club. Personally, I’d rather have Fred Hickman.

  51. 51
    Nate Says:

Trey, I completely agree on Chip Caray.

Steve, our front office can’t keep bringing these guys in and pretending they are in their prime. Lee’s best season was 2005. He hasn’t done much of anything in recent memory. I also remember him being a total choke artist for the Cubs in the postseason. It would of been a huge trade 5 years ago. Wren essentially acquired Troy Glaus II and McOut II when he got Lee and Ankiel. I would much rather be watching Gregor and Freddie get an opportunity than vets who continue to struggle. Him patting himself on the back for his acquisitions in that interview was pretty funny. Has he been watching these guys since they came to Atlanta?

Another issue is Bobby. Yeah, Melky does not get to a ball as quick as Ankiel or McOut, but he does this strange thing with his bat where he makes contact and puts it in play. Same goes for Matty. You can’t start guys in our lineup for defensive reasons. It’s just not good enough. I could see him justifying playing those guys if we had a couple guys who could hit a bunch of HRs, but we don’t have that on the Braves. We have to play all of our .260ish hitters to win. You can’t have the 8-hole, .200 hitting defensive specialist. It just shrinks the odds even more of this team scoring any runs. The problem is Bobby will continue to play these guys until they get hurt or cut or traded. How long did Prado sit on our bench while KJ played? Omar is only in there now because of an injury. His strange loyalties continue to hurt the Braves. I cannot wait until we have a manager who plays players based on on-field performance.

  52. 52
    Mara Wanna Says:

    Looking forward to next season.

  53. 53
    Nate Says:

This game is a must win for the Braves. We’ve got Wainwright and Carpenter coming up. Say what you will about the Cards’ struggles in the 2nd half, their lineup has El Hombre in it, and I can’t remember a game in which we beat either Carpenter or Wainwright. I think these are the same four Cards’ pitchers that helped them sweep the Braves in 4 earlier this year.

Am I wrong, or are we now 1-7 in our last 8 road games. I know we got swept in CO, there’s the FLA series, and this one. Was there another series I’m leaving out that we might have possibly won? It would make me feel better about our playoff chances. We have 10 more road games…

  54. 54
    Bub Says:

Danny, that’s a brilliant link. Roger Miller rules.

  55. 55
    Nate Says:

Does anyone know what the WC tie breaker is, say if we end the season tied in the WC with the Padres or Giants? Do we have a 1 game playoff, or do we get it because we have won the season series with both?

  56. 56
    Nate Says:

Philly is already all over that Andrew Miller guy…

  57. 57
    Curt Says:

1 game plaoff with the game site determined by a coin toss. Seriously

  58. 58
    Nate Says:

That’s ridiculous. Why wouldn’t they make it head-to-head? That rule gives an inferior team with one great ace a chance to make it over a much better TEAM. How does that make the playoffs better for the fans? In stupid rules for sports, that ranks right behind home field advantage in the Series decided by the All-Star game.

  59. 59
    Nate Says:

The Pirates finally showed up for this series.

  60. 60
    Ham Says:

What does the “6″ next to the ATL mean on the ticker on the bottom of the tv screen?

  61. 61
    Ham Says:

Wait, now it says “8″? I am really confused. Why does it keep going up?

  62. 62
    Nate Says:

The score keepers got bored while trying to keep track of our runs and are instead now keeping track of Bobby’s nose picks. He’s having a big night so far.

  63. 63
    Curt Says:

Ham, note the 7 next to the Phils. I tell you, it’s much more fun looking at their score as a 1st place team. Now all these days we refuse to make a move on the Phils mean we stay in 2nd. They mentioned this morning that the Braves were leading the WC. That was the first time that idea had even crossed my mind. Now I have to track SF and CO games? Seriously?

  64. 64
    Steve Says:

I’m not willing to assign any meaning to anything with this, but it sure feels better.

  65. 65
    Steve Says:

New blog is posted from Brave in NY.

  66. 66
    Steve Says:

One of our listeners, Travis, just posted this comedy short he directed. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbJyZ4eDkIs

  67. 67
    Will Says:

10 game win streak coming. All the pieces are going to come together. Our slumping batters will hit. We will ride into the PO four games in first and take the 1 st round 3-1, the pennant 4-2. We will then be swept by the Yankees and Bobby will announce ” one more for Chipper”.

  68. 68
    Will Says:

And in that scenario Curt will have to die. One of the stars always has to die. Either aneurism, self inflicted gunshot, or accidentally when Steve throws the remote at Bobby on tv and it boomerangs into Curt.

  69. 69
    Curt Says:

Getting pulled into a threasher. That’s how I want to go.

    Giants are losing

  70. 70
    Ham Says:

I think it should be complications from a freak tomahawk choppin’ injury. Self-inflicted.

For the record, I am comfortable with exploring Curt’s demise if it means Post Season success. He already is missing his gall bladder.

  71. 71
    Curt Says:

Are we talking NLCS? WS? Championship? What’s the payoff.

  72. 72
    Steve Says:

Curt – I gotta tell you, I’m just talking getting to the NLCS.

  73. 73
    Curt Says:

Hmmm. That doesn’t seem like such a good deal.

  74. 74
    Mara Wanna Says:

    Thank you D. Lee!!!

  75. 75
    Will Says:

So far the scenario is working brilliantly….prepare Curt for the sacrifice!

  76. 76
    Will Says:

    or not

  77. 77
    Anne Says:

Thought I’d chime in. I leave for Montreal tomorrow…where they’re first in their division! (that was a hilarious joke…in my mind) So, I’ll be out of pocket until next Tuesday. My hope meter is still at 2, just because I can’t give up.

So. Let’s talk about ANOTHER team and ANOTHER manager. Can someone ‘splain me the reason that LaRussa “mixes it up” and doesn’t bat the pitcher last? The pros, the cons…does it depend on the pitcher? I remember hearing he does that a lot, or at least, has done it before. I don’t quite understand the idea behind it.

Mythbusters is on Discovery tonight…just sayin’.

  78. 78
    Curt Says:

My prediction is that we get 4 more hits tonight and lose 6-3.

LaRussa has stated in the past that he does that because of some math he did about how many times the #9 batter leads off an inning – or something like that.

I think I am going to watch Joe vs. the Volcano for some inspiritation.

“I know he can get the job, but can he do the job.”

  79. 79
    Curt Says:

    Um, 7-3

  80. 80
    Anne Says:

I just flipped back…how is Nate McLouth up to bat? Never mind…

Curt, it was a typo, clearly. You meant 8-3.

  81. 81
    Curt Says:

right. Can I say for the umptenth time in the past week and a half, disgraceful. Once again, the Cardinals come into a series with the Braves with their offense in the toilet.

  82. 82
    Mara Wanna Says:

I seriously hate baseball. I’m going to find a new hobby.

  83. 83
    Anne Says:

Hockey season starts soon. I know this because I thought maybe I could catch a pre-season Montreal Canadiens game…but I’m a coupla weeks early. C’est la vie.

  84. 84
    Anne Says:

Not that it did us any good with the double play one batter later, but…here’s a phrase you don’t hear every day: “Nate McLouth with his second base hit of the night…”

  85. 85
    Steve Says:

When the team’s strengths abandon them, it gets really depressing. What a horrible week.

  86. 86
    Anne Says:

So glad I gave away my tickets for tonight through Tuesday night. I’m a terrible fan…but honestly, give me a reason to hope. Please?!?

  87. 87
    Mara Wanna Says:

It feels like we’re 10 under..my hope meter is stuck on “very gloomy”.

  88. 88
    Bubdylan Says:

Good Grief. Not sure why I even checked the score.

  89. 89
    Curt Says:

    SF, 1 game behind

  90. 90
    Steve Says:

Mara – the reason to have hope is that this team was in 1st for 90+ days, can hit at times, not too long ago had really dominant starting pitching, the Cards were pretty inept (until last night), and we have the best home record in the majors. Now, I’m not saying this team looks any better than a sub .500 club right now – but they’ve turned it around after rough patches all year. It can happen. We could wake up and be tied for 1st tomorrow.

  91. 91
    Nate Says:

Nate McLouth is batting 6th tonight. I had to look at the lineup tweet 5 times to make sure I was reading that correctly. Bobby, please don’t second guess yourself on retiring.

  92. 92
    Ham Says:

McOut (Of Here) just bought himself 25 more starts.

  93. 93
    Danny Says:

Nate McClouth is a hit machine! We should move him to the three hole!

  94. 94
    Will Says:

We have to come up with a term for when the sucky player does something exciting so that we temporarily forget that he sucks. And of course Bobby never forgets it….McClouth has done it once – his walkoff homer where afterwards they cleared the dugout… Ankiel did it with a game winning double once….

who else? and what do we call the phenomenon?

  95. 95
    Curt Says:

Even the blind squirrel, something, something. I’ll take it

  96. 96
    Curt Says:

    How about the ‘Fransisco’

  97. 97
    Mara Wanna WS Win Says:

I’m trying Steve…just seems like we’re spiraling the wrong direction.

  98. 98
    Curt Says:

Meanwhile, Phils are slapping the Mets around.

  99. 99
    Mara Wanna WS Win Says:

DANGIT!!! Just when I decide to be ok with losing here comes hope! Prado looked like his old self on that hit.

  100. 100
    Ham Says:

I will take that inning. That is some good a$$ baseball.

I know I am switching sports here, but I think we should call it the Namath.

  101. 101
    Bub Says:

“The Namath” works. Doubly, even, since it resembles “nay math,” as in, Bobby’s bad reasoning resulting from said anomolies.

  102. 102
    Mara Wanna WS Win Says:

Nice to see some hits. Can this be a turning point of sorts? Looked like a great crowd as well.

  103. 103
    Will Says:

i dont get “The Namath”…. is this in reference to Joe? I just read his Wiki page…basically he was a badass…aparently a bit of a drunk who played on bum knees and won championships and cried when Bear Bryant died… whats wrong with that? If he sucked it must have been in his late career…thats just getting old…was before my time though.

  104. 104
    Steve Says:

Mara – it was an amazingly enthusiastic crowd. And lots of folks as well. Good ol’ Friday night fireworks.

Ham, I do agree that McLouth bought himself a bunch more starts. And, based on his last two days, why not? Ride him until he starts sucking again (+ 3 games extra because it’s Bobby). He’s looked like a line drive hitter the last couple of games and not a pop fly in the infield hitter like he’s been all season.

Tonight felt so improbable based on this last week. And when Carpenter hit that homer I completely lost all hope. What a great inning that 6th inning was. I almost still can’t believe it.

  105. 105
    Curt Says:

It seems like a big win. Not to sound like Steve, but we beat a good pitcher after a bad start, and were able to break through against the Cards. Here’s hoping that all means something.

  106. 106
    Nate Says:

Can I call ‘em or what? McLouth will bat cleanup today.

  107. 107
    Mara Wanna Says:

Make us eat our words McOut!

  108. 108
    Mara Wanna Says:

My son just got his first RBI of the season. The next play he was tagged out at 2nd although he did slide attempting to avoid the tag and got VERY dirty.

  109. 109
    Mara Wanna Says:

Thwing my 12 year old a birthday party. I know…how am I possibly old enough to have a 12 year old! Did we have the bases loaded with no outs and only score 1? I may have looked on the wrong line.

  110. 110
    Curt Says:

    2 outs

  111. 111
    Curt Says:

2 errors. 10 LOB. Tie game. Phils coming back against the Mets. Great day

  112. 112
    Curt Says:

Like I said, great day. 1st place feels so good

  113. 113
    Mara Wanna Says:

Yahoo!!!! Can’t wait to see the condensed game!

  114. 114
    Will Says:

Just watched the hilights on mlb…..

    was anybody there?

that had to rank as one of the top 3 walkoffs this year….simply due to the “charged playoff atmosphere”

    1- Conrad’s slam
    2- McLouth’s HR – clear the dugout
    3- Gonzalez’s HR

this year’s hilight reel is insane. Need some of this magic for about three more weeks.

  115. 115
    Mara Wanna Says:

What a great game! I love McLOUTH going and getting that ball to hit a 3 bagger, Jason’s shoe string grab in the 11th, and Gonzo’s jack to win the game after looking lost in his previous at bats. I also love his skipping from 3rd to home. One happy fella there. Oh and it was also fun when Mac caught Pujols stealing 3rd.

  116. 116
    Mara Wanna Says:

Did y’all hear the Rangers beat the Yanks by pulling a Frenchy?

  117. 117
    Steve Says:

Hey all. Back to regular schedule this week. New show around 11:30 tonight.
