@114 – is great. Take the 4.5 minutes and watch it.

So crazy that both our Shortstops are just gone. I’m not so sad about Jack Wilson being out either, but we now have zero leverage in looking for a stop gap solution until Simmons comes back.

Prado did look pretty damn good at SS tonight.

Are Jeff Blauser or Andres Thomas available?

So who are we going to get for a SS? According to mlbtraderumors, Wren said a SS will be obtained in the next 72 hours. I think that was BEFORE Wilson went down.

Would Prado at SS be out of the question??

    @129

    ESPN says possibly one of:

Arizona’s John McDonald (on the DL but shouldn’t be out too much longer)
    Seattle’s Brendan Ryan
    Twins Jamey Carroll

Carroll plays 2B (33 games 2012), 3B (20) and SS (32) all with pretty good fielding pct. (2B – .977, 3B – .976 and SS – .994) and a much better average than Ryan. Carroll would most certainly be an upgrade over Wilson as a back-up/bench guy when Simmons returns.

McDonald’s injury is an oblique strain, so I would be wary of him since we really don’t have time to see how much he has recovered before trading for him…

Hoping none of those cost us more than some C level prospect.

    Shaun Says:

@mlbbowman: “Sounds like Todd Redmond will be going to the Reds for a SS. Likely Valdez or Janish. Looking to confirm. ‪#Braves”

  8. 133
    Shaun Says:

@mlbbowman: “Confirmed: Braves have traded Todd Redmond to the Reds for SS Paul Janish”

  9. 134
    Shaun Says:

Janish is what Jack Wilson was 2-4 years ago, which is not really a bad thing.

  10. 135
    Curt Says:

Hey look, a new light hitting SS

  11. 136
    Walker Says:

Janish does nothing for me. Leave Prado at SS.

  12. 137
    Bubdylan Says:

So, Hudson and Hanson for a 1-2 punch in the playoffs, eh?

  13. 138
    Bubdylan Says:

Not worth Redmond at all. This organization is slowly bleeding to death.

  14. 139
    Adam Says:

Bourn + Prado save the day!

Those guys bail us out so much.

  15. 140
    Bubdylan Says:

Holy Smokes, I missed a great ending. Looks like Craig struck out the side again, too.

    Curt Says:

I asked on Twitter, so I will ask again. Why not just let Prado play short until Simmons comes back. Is he that big of a defensive liability? The answer is no. I would rather have some Diaz/Hinske/Constanza in left with Prado at short than the Janish thing looming.

  17. 142
    Adam Says:

I think we need to give Prado a 15 year deal. If he ever leaves this team we’ll have like 5 holes to fill.

    Kate Says:

#141 – I don’t know how much you value UZR, but Prado actually has a negative at second base for his career. I don’t think he should be at SS unless it’s an emergency. Plus Prado is excellent in LF if you play him at short you make two defensive positions weaker.

In the vein of commenting on your own post (precedent set by Steve):

    @130

So much for ESPN analyst’s opinions…

Loved the description by Wren that with a .981 fielding pct. in 283 career games at SS “He’s a proven defensive talent”.

Personally, I thought Carroll might have been a pretty good pick-up – better batting average, better fielding pct. at SS (.994), also plays 2B & 3B as well with better fielding pcts. – also could have displaced Jack on the bench… could have been another defensive Prado on the infield…

  20. 145
    Walker Says:

    @141

Kate I’m a real huge saber guy but Prado’s positives on offense far outweigh whatever negatives he has at SS. Trust me, we will lose more runs putting Yanish out there everyday. I mean My GOD the dude can’t hit a lick. So I say only use him as a defensive replacement.

What we should have done was use Redmond to aquire a decent bench bat to play the LF. Leave Prado @SS and traded a piece of crap for someone who can just play SS defensivel well.

  21. 146
    Walker Says:

Wren gets a C- for this trade.

  22. 147
    ham Says:

146 – totally agree. Dumb, reactive, panic move. Unless they aren’t being honest about Simmons injury, why do this. A little frustrating.

  23. 148
    Kate Says:

Redmond is in his 4th year at AAA and is going to be a minor league free agent at the end of the year. Wren gave up nothing to get Janish and he’s at least better than Jack Wilson. He’ll play good defense at an important position until we get Simmons back. Maybe we get lucky and he swings the bat well for a couple of weeks.

  24. 149
    Walker Says:

I just feel like Redmond could of been traded for some offensive bench help. He’s a pitcher that some of the teams would give him a chance to be their 4th or 5th starter.

There had to be a SS out there that can play defense extremely well that didn’t cost Redmond. Or am I overvaluing Redmond?

  25. 150
    Curt Says:

Probably overvaluing him. He wasn’t getting you much more than a player like Janish. I’d be surprised if he even makes it up in Cincy.

And according to the TV crew, Janish was batting over .300 for a stretch at AAA before he hurt his wrist. I’m amazed Pastor is just a forgotten man so quick. I know they want him playing 2nd and some OF in the future, but he started the season as our starting SS and now he can’t even get called up except as the emergency SS for a day.
