Show #198: The Braves Right the Ship
The good and bad of this week. The impact of the Dodgers trade. McCann’s 2013 option. And Mac vs. Uggla: Who’s doing more damage?

Great show guys. One thing is for sure about this team…its interesting.Chipper’s farewell tour, along with Heyward and Freeman coming of age…its alot of fun, most of the time.
August 27th, 2012 at 10:54 am
And that’s what was particularly remarkable for me this past week that it was so decidedly NOT fun for stretches. But this team, as evidenced by the last two games in SF is not falling over and is continuing to find enough offense to win.
Hopefully Mac’s performance last night is the start of better production from him. If he would just get on base over .325 and hit better than .250 it would be an enormous boon.
August 27th, 2012 at 12:37 pm
This team just has very few weak spots and it just feels like the bad stretches won’t last as long.
Last season there were gaping holes in the lineup in centerfield (even after Bourn came in he wasn’t good) and at shortstop, then there were the nagging injuries/infection from Prado and Heyward. All of that sort of set the tone, it seemed. Then, towards the end, the bullpen was overworked and the starting staff seemed drained.
This season it seems like they have the players at every position. Even if one or two struggle, you know the rest of the team will pick them up at some point and not allow an extremely awful stretch of games.
August 27th, 2012 at 1:46 pm
Not to hit (no pun) on Uggla again….but besides his awful or lack there of hitting, he had that bad error and a couple of base running mistakes recently.
So when Simmons and Wilson get healthy do we drop Janish? I am thinking Janish over Wilson….
August 27th, 2012 at 1:55 pm
@3 – Shaun, you’re right. And I fully intended to reference your latest blog in the show last night but somehow never did. All – good stuff in Shaun’s latest blog.
@4 – Janish over Wilson. Not even close.
August 27th, 2012 at 2:19 pm
Great show! Go Braves! I was too stupid not to be concerned this time last year. Since my baseball heart has already been broken I can’t seem to believe this year. Trying to…can’t do it.
August 27th, 2012 at 5:55 pm
I’m loving this

August 27th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
Steve @5, thanks.
August 27th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Fredi wont even stand up for his players. Argue Fredi!
August 27th, 2012 at 10:38 pm
The homers.
August 27th, 2012 at 11:15 pm
@10 – I thought of you immediately.
August 28th, 2012 at 12:18 am
Only down by 2 so we bring in Batista. Venters? O’Flaherty?
August 28th, 2012 at 12:34 pm
I have a question; How could you find out who the Braves have claimed on waivers? Or you will never know? Jacoby Ellisbury is an intriguing thought, imo
August 28th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
Have you read this? Thoughts?
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1312066-mlb-trade-rumors-why-braves-would-be-better-off-dealing-michael-bourn
August 28th, 2012 at 3:53 pm
@14
That was the dumbest article I’ve ever read. We’re trying to win a championship right?
August 28th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
@13 – Waiver claims are secret. Only if someone leaks something do you find out.
August 28th, 2012 at 8:51 pm
Not looking good for the Nats tonight. GOTS TO WIN.
August 28th, 2012 at 9:09 pm
Phillies winning, Nats losing, Kemp and Molina injured in potentially big ways. Crazy night in baseball.
August 28th, 2012 at 9:27 pm
How about the Nats and Cards both losing 9-0
August 28th, 2012 at 9:40 pm
I’m tellin’ ya…something’s in the air. Hope it’s blowing our way!
August 28th, 2012 at 9:54 pm
Maybe the baseball gods are coming full circle? Braves had key injuries last year.
August 28th, 2012 at 10:44 pm
Click “Like” if you love Kris Medlen.
Wait, what site is this?
August 28th, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Someone high up in this organization needs to walk up to Medlen, take off his hat, lower his head … lower … and allow Kris to punch him dead in the face. How many wins have we thrown in the trash by keeping this guy pushed back?
(Now he’ll give up four runs in the next inning and go to the DL with a warped ass…)
August 28th, 2012 at 10:58 pm
The really should subtract a hit from a pitcher’s WHIP when he picks ‘em off like Wyatt Earp.
August 28th, 2012 at 10:59 pm
If they L.A. Bluesox miss the playoffs I will die of laughter.
August 28th, 2012 at 11:00 pm
*the
August 28th, 2012 at 11:03 pm
Even if I was right handed I’d pitch to the Braves with my left hand.
August 28th, 2012 at 11:10 pm
Kris is trying to get his WHIP under 1.00 before Uggla’s BA goes under .200; good luck, Meds.
August 28th, 2012 at 11:36 pm
lol, still they lean too far. still the medman picks them off.
August 28th, 2012 at 11:37 pm
The pickoffs are too good to be believed. I’m going to break into Curt’s house tonight and steal the Medlen poster out of his bedroom.
By the way, if you haven’t seen this yet, it’s pretty damn good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EF91gJ6D0E&feature=share
August 28th, 2012 at 11:39 pm
Kris Medlen is a pitching GENIUS.
August 28th, 2012 at 11:42 pm
#30 is the best thing I’ve ever seen.
August 29th, 2012 at 12:18 am
1.00!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbt30UnzRWw
August 29th, 2012 at 12:19 am
Instead of resigning Michael Bourn we should invest the money into cloning technology. We need more Medlens.
August 29th, 2012 at 12:26 am
Ahh, the ol’ Homer-and-hat-trick that Adam Dunn patented.
August 29th, 2012 at 12:39 am
Padres never had a chance.
8 innings of Meds + 1 inning of Kimbrel = thanks for playing.
Strike 3 to Venable, strikes 2 and 3 to Headley, and strike 1 to Quentin all made my wee-woo move.
August 29th, 2012 at 12:39 am
Wow
August 29th, 2012 at 12:40 am
I wish someone had figured out how great a starter Kris would make. Who knew???? So glad for an early game tomorrow. Good night and Go Braves!
August 29th, 2012 at 12:47 am
2013 Rotation: Beachy, Medlen, Hudson, Minor, Maholm
So, can we just let Bourn go and trade Hanson and Teheran for some hitting in the offseason?
August 29th, 2012 at 12:49 am
Is Medlen pitcher of the month?
August 29th, 2012 at 12:52 am
#37 was in reference to Kimbrel’s 9th. I was drooling, so I couldn’t add to the comment.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:27 am
I don’t agree with trading Tehran. Trading Delgado would be better.
August 29th, 2012 at 6:31 am
I thought #37 was in response to #36.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:12 am
Saw this on the postgame report, Medlen is 4-0 in August with a 0.51 ERA. Is that good?
August 29th, 2012 at 11:35 am
Curt it is ok to have a “man crush” on a sports figure right? I think so!
August 29th, 2012 at 12:20 pm
Even Meds’ post-game comments are lights out. I can’t believe that Curt wanted to keep him in the bullpen for so long.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:52 pm
Ham, So with that being said about the bullpen….what if he had started all year?
August 29th, 2012 at 2:14 pm
No kidding. How stupid was I.
Doc, absolutely. And Medlen looks like a cuddler.
ESPN now has an innings meter on Strasburg. Turns out if he gets shelled, he gets pulled earlier, thereby keeping him around longer this season. I’ll take that trade off.
August 29th, 2012 at 2:16 pm
PS – ESPN sucks
August 29th, 2012 at 7:56 pm
PS – Hanson sucks
August 29th, 2012 at 8:09 pm
Honestly, if you are an opposing team, don’t you have 3 lefties who throw 70 miles an hour just ready to go when you play the Braves?
August 29th, 2012 at 8:19 pm
I think Balsley needs to be an adjective
August 29th, 2012 at 9:29 pm
so bad
August 29th, 2012 at 10:16 pm
5-5 would have been so much cooler than 4-6
August 29th, 2012 at 10:22 pm
Can we move Hanson to the pen too?
August 29th, 2012 at 10:45 pm
We can’t really blame Hanson for this one. He gave up 4 runs and 1 of them was unearned. Our offense scored 2 runs and one of them was unearned as well. I’m putting this one on our offense.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:01 pm
#56 although he didn’t really pitch that long either.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:02 pm
And you can blame our offense. An Fredi for having Prado at 1st. 4 different positions wasn’t enough?
August 30th, 2012 at 12:11 am
Was a good day to be stuck reading Southern History.
August 30th, 2012 at 12:15 am
If we can just have one more 7 or 8 game winning streak left in us we would be just fine.
August 30th, 2012 at 7:40 am
Phillies and Rockies both playing really well right now and we might be getting Halladay, Lee, Hamels. Need some good starts this weekend.

This is one of my alltime fave bands and they sent this out to people on their mailing list…its a collection of live shows in athens. I have now wasted about an hour…its awesome…
Theres a bunch of other bands too that people might like, Wilco, Cracker, Dinosaur Jr and lots I dont know…no Everett Brothers, sorry, I know that is a popular one on this board.
If you dont know “Another Song About the Rain” by Cracker…you def should…
August 30th, 2012 at 10:58 am
and another must listen Cracker song is “Eurotrash Girl” , just listening now…Johnny Hickman shreds guitar…he has that high lonesome Les Paul tone…ossm
sorry…non- braves diversion
go braves
August 30th, 2012 at 5:52 pm
Will, good stuff, although its the Avett Brothers I think. (Leah just fired you from the comments board.) I would add Built To Spill to your list, especially their album You In Reverse. I have been wearing that out on my iPod lately.
That and Call Me Maybe.
August 30th, 2012 at 8:28 pm
thanks Ham…
August 30th, 2012 at 9:13 pm
Oh Will…you have been in Hong Kong for way too long.

Im glad the 2 teams we are competing for a playoff spot with will be beating up on each other this weekend.
August 30th, 2012 at 11:14 pm
Walker, it’s hard to know who to cheer for!
August 31st, 2012 at 2:28 am
When in doubt always cheeer against the Nats.
August 31st, 2012 at 3:31 pm
@69 – Indeed.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Eurotrash Girl. That whole Kerosene Hat album is just spectacular.
Nervous about this weekend.
August 31st, 2012 at 6:53 pm
Did anybody do any Eastwooding today? Lol
August 31st, 2012 at 7:27 pm
Congratulations to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, as he was named Astros Director of Pro Scouting. I know he’s been on ABT a few times.
If you’ve never listened to Baseball Prospectus’s Up & In podcast, download some episodes now. I guarantee you that you’ll know more about the game after listening to a few.
August 31st, 2012 at 8:37 pm
Bub, can you explain once again what’s wrong with Mac’s eyes? You know he reads these posts.
August 31st, 2012 at 8:37 pm
…when he can see.
August 31st, 2012 at 8:53 pm
I’m more worried about his bat.
Thank you, Marty
August 31st, 2012 at 9:03 pm

August 31st, 2012 at 9:06 pm
Freemeeeeeeeeen!
August 31st, 2012 at 9:16 pm
Craaaaaaaaap!
August 31st, 2012 at 9:23 pm
Sometimes needs to tell Minor that when he does get run support he needs to shut the other team down.
August 31st, 2012 at 9:28 pm
Thanks strUggla.
August 31st, 2012 at 9:29 pm
Curt, your sentence made me laugh.
August 31st, 2012 at 10:15 pm
The worst of the very bad words.
August 31st, 2012 at 10:18 pm
Kimbrel
August 31st, 2012 at 10:38 pm
Bound to happen every 100th batter or so.
August 31st, 2012 at 10:40 pm
Yeah, I just want us to not blow this game. Again.
August 31st, 2012 at 10:40 pm
and thats the ballgame folks. Goodnight.
August 31st, 2012 at 10:41 pm
Scratch that. Martinez……… Man is he bad right now.
August 31st, 2012 at 10:42 pm
4-1 lead on Halladay. Can’t lose that game 3 times.
August 31st, 2012 at 11:01 pm
Can we bring some relievers up and release Martinez?
August 31st, 2012 at 11:10 pm
Brutal.
August 31st, 2012 at 11:28 pm
It’s unfortunate Kimbrel who makes half a million dollars is never able to pitch more than 1 inning.
August 31st, 2012 at 11:39 pm
It’s unfortunate that the Braves are playing like they did last year.
August 31st, 2012 at 11:54 pm
Its fortunate that I read these posts before looking at mlb.com.
somehow think we didn’t make up ground vs the Nats.
I’ll skip straight to tmz.com.
September 1st, 2012 at 3:40 pm
Last night was so depressing. Losing, winning, tied, winning, tied, lose. Horrible. The good news is it’s September – our best month!
September 1st, 2012 at 5:44 pm
Yes. It’s playing out so much better today.
September 1st, 2012 at 6:47 pm
So… we’re actually gonna keep this up until we miss the playoffs? In spite of having the easiest second half schedule in the entire league? Seem right.
September 1st, 2012 at 7:22 pm
Yes
September 1st, 2012 at 7:53 pm
In the three seconds it took me to think, “I guess I’d rather the Nats win this game, since the Cards are our real comp…” the Cards won. :/
September 1st, 2012 at 8:13 pm
This team isn’t fun to watch right now.
September 1st, 2012 at 9:24 pm
Huddy and Medlen at the Auburn game having a grand ole time.
September 2nd, 2012 at 1:33 am
Huddy and Meds are Clemson fans? 8)
September 2nd, 2012 at 3:59 am
I can’t wait to hear what the postseason hope meter is this week….this is a nightmare all over again…
September 2nd, 2012 at 9:00 am
Bub, it has NOT been a happy home the last 14 hours or so. Our poor children.
September 2nd, 2012 at 12:50 pm
Leah, tell him Bama is taking applications for new fans. Hope that helps.
(I’m really not gloating; I think Michigan is butt-awful and I’ve seen this script before. I expect Bama to get caught off guard & lose one. Then lose one or two more out of deflation.)
Anyway… go Braves?
September 2nd, 2012 at 12:50 pm
Can this week’s show be called “Braves wrong the ship”?
September 2nd, 2012 at 12:51 pm
Or, in opposite to “right,” how about “Braves left the ship”?
September 2nd, 2012 at 3:37 pm
Braves wreck the ship? Braves ship the bed?
Reminder: No show tonight due to the holiday. And depression. We will be back on tomorrow night.
September 2nd, 2012 at 5:18 pm
the suckfest continues.
September 2nd, 2012 at 5:22 pm
I hate baseball.
September 2nd, 2012 at 5:41 pm
1st inning. 0-4 with RISP. Words can’t even describe.
September 2nd, 2012 at 6:20 pm
Of the 162 games of baseball, I watch or listen to about 100. That’s three hundred hours per year. Plus time online celebrating or lamenting, so double that. 600 hours per year. There are 112 waking hours in a week. That’s 5.35 entire waking weeks spent on this per year.
5.35 entire waking weeks. On this. This product. This very, very bad product. I hate the Braves and I hate myself for pouring out this much of my life on them. They seriously, absolutely, disgustingly, suck dirt.
September 2nd, 2012 at 6:41 pm
On the bright side, we might be done with Fredi
September 2nd, 2012 at 7:27 pm
On another bright side, we inexplicably still hold a semi comfortable wild card lead. But come back to me in a week and this could change if we don’t start playing better.
I wonder if it’s conditioning. Does this team physically run into a brick wall in September? Remember in 2010 when we barely made the playoffs, we a run down bunch that September too.
R.I.P Mac Thomason
September 2nd, 2012 at 7:36 pm
113:Yeah, we thought that last September about the comfortable lead in the WC.
I’ll take knowing now by not getting in then some major collapse — but I guess there’s really not much of a difference at this point in the season. Days are just falling off of the calendar now and it’s down to where every game counts just like in football.
At least in 2010 we didn’t have a massive collapse like 2011 and apparently 2012.
It does kinda make you wonder what’s going on in the clubhouse at this time of the season. Do guys really like to play for Fredi?
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 pm
retraction.
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 pm
That’s the most insane thing I’ve seen since … I dunno … Brooks Conrad.
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:36 pm
THE MAN IS A HERO! Glad I didn’t stop watching! WOW!
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:38 pm
I did stop watching. Turned it back on about one minute ago, looked at score, looked at men on bases, looked at Chipper, looked at Paps, pitch, HR, game over.
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 pm
I went to the car (to go to a store that was already closed) and I heard this noise as if my radio was not tuned in. Then I heard Jim Power come back from his apparent long paus and said, can you believe what just happened?
Jim Powell is not my favorite annoucer, in fact, I don’t care for him at all. But I gotta tell ya something, this was not only his greatest call, it was a call for Braves Nation all time. That call ranks up there with Skip Carey’s Braves Win call. If you all get a chance to hear it, you gotta, it was a great call!
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:53 pm
Better than his, “and this stadium is upside down!” call? Gotta try and find it.
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 pm
Oh yes, Bub. Really, it was an outstanding call.
September 2nd, 2012 at 8:55 pm
I can’t find it just yet but I’ll bet you a week’s pay that MLB network will feature it because I can’t imagine Chip topping this call.
September 2nd, 2012 at 9:03 pm
Can’t wait to hear it. I like his big calls better than his … all the other stuff he says.
September 2nd, 2012 at 9:22 pm
I think his big calls are dissapointing… and don’t even mention Don Sutton’s monotoned, fake enthusiastic calls. No, this one, because of the whole situation will go down as one of the best of Chipper’s and Braves history.
September 2nd, 2012 at 11:09 pm
First off, UNBELIEVABLE. And I’ll fully admit that I stopped watching in the 5th inning and was catching up on Louis episodes with my wife when I got a text from a buddy saying “can you f***ing believe it!?” I knew right then we’d come back and won, but it was far better than I’d imagined. I’ve watched the Prado double and Chipper HR about 15 times so far. So great.
And whose call are we talking about? Jim Powell’s? I hope so, because you hear Chip’s call on the video and it sucks as usual.
September 2nd, 2012 at 11:11 pm
By the way, go read DOB’s game wrap-up article for the Chipper quote about coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th that he said three hours BEFORE today’s game. It makes the whole thing even better – if that’s possible.
September 3rd, 2012 at 12:06 am
Just saw this sad news about Mac at Braves Journal. It’s been coming, but it’s terribly sad now that it’s here: http://www.bravesjournal.com/?p=8449
September 3rd, 2012 at 12:16 am
125: Yes, Steve. Jim Powell. And you are right, Chip’s call — meh!
September 3rd, 2012 at 1:45 am
Amazing
Chipper’s swing on that Papelbon fastball is seriously the most perfect baseball swing I’ve seen in my entire life. Absolute perfect form. Put that in the Baseball encyclopedia.
September 3rd, 2012 at 2:28 am
Jim Powell’s call. Well, it seemed to sound better the first time on the radio. But for him, it’s pretty good. 1:24 mark or this clip.
http://www.talkingchop.com/2012/9/2/3287989/chipper-does-it-again-braves-stun-phillies-with-walk-off-homer

That is a really nice call from Jim Powell. How amazing it must have been to witness it in person.

September 3rd, 2012 at 3:46 pm
Medlen
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:07 pm
@133. I really enjoyed the Phillies’ announcer there. Great win today! Go Braves!
September 3rd, 2012 at 7:25 pm
@136 when i pasted that link I swar it was to a clip that had all 3 calls strung together….and now it is just the Phillies call….bit weird…but listening to the Phillies call is good “Its a crazy game”
in other news, the Nats will not lose
September 3rd, 2012 at 8:18 pm
Neeeeew show!
