It’s about time the cardinals magic finally ran out! Up 3 games to 1 and they can’t close it out, gotta love it! It’s just sad to think if the braves could have won that wild card game, I really feel like they could still be playing right now…

  2. 2
    Curt Says:

    Agreed.

Oh, and for the 400th time – did I mention that I picked a Detroit-SF World Series at the beginning of the season?

    Steve Says:

@1 – This year will stick with me for a long, long time. We talked about which of the last three years’ season endings was the most painful and I said last year. But as I sit here now, it is this year by a long shot. The 2012 team had so much potential and we never got to see it play out.

As I watched Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews interviewing the Giants on the field I imagined it being the Braves instead. We should have had that this year.

    David Says:

An interview with DOB? Can’t wait to hear this one!

And yeah — this team had tons of potential to make it far into the postseason. More than 2010 (too many key players banged up) or 2011 (banged up and slumping). This year sucks. Glad the Cardinals are out of it. Go Tigers.

Apparently the Twins are hoping to add 3 starting pitchers this offseason. I’ve got to think that Frank Wren and Terry Ryan (Twins’ GM) will have many phone calls. Josh Willingham and Denard Span are very enticing.

Here’s how I would think the Braves’ pitchers would stack up in a possible trade scenario:

    - Medlen: untouchable

    - Hudson: next-to-untouchable, but I don’t think the Braves would have any interest in trading him anyway.

    - Minor: would you trade Minor for a guy like Willingham? Or Span? While it’d be painful to part with Minor, I don’t think I’d trade him for either of those guys, although if it’s the right player, I think I would. But I think his second half solidified him as next year’s number 3 starter.

    - Maholm: if a team is interested in Maholm, I’m betting the Braves would trade him. Totally. And I wouldn’t mind a bit. (I also wouldn’t mind if they kept him.)

    - Hanson: I doubt the Twins (or any other team) would be interested unless they line up 2 other better/more experienced starting pitchers first (Greinke? Haren? Dempster?). But if that’s the case, it would mean that a deal probably wouldn’t get done until much later in the offseason, and I don’t think the Braves are interested in waiting that long for the major holes in their lineup. (My guess on the Braves’ approach with Hanson: hope he has another good first half next season, then try to trade him midseason.)

    - Delgado: if the Braves were willing to trade Delgado for Dempster at the All-Star break, I’m betting they’d trade Delgado for an everyday position player such as Willingham or Span. It would probably hurt a little less seeing him go to the AL, too.

    - Teheran: my guess is that the Braves would be a little more open to trading Delgado than they would Teheran, but only if it’s the right player.

  5. 5
    Steve Says:

@4 – IMO, you trade either Delgado or Teheran before Minor. We know Minor can do it. We think Delgado can but we’re not certain and who knows about Teheran anymore.

  6. 6
    David Says:

#5 — I agree. I’ve got to think that Delgado/Teheran are probably #1 and 2 on the list of “pitchers most likely to be traded this offseason.” I’m sure the Braves would much rather unload Hanson before Delgado/Teheran, but I think he’s got so little trade value at this point that it’s unlikely they’ll get anything good in return for him.

Any thoughts out there about McCann? Olney suggesting that the Braves could exercise the 2013 option, then trade him. No way that happens, not with Bethancourt still needing plenty of development.

  7. 7
    eric Says:

    Willingham – blech.

  8. 8
    Steve Says:

@7 – I think Willingham would be a nice addition. He’s under contract for two more years at $7MM/ year. His OBP last year was .366 (career .361). He hit 35 HR in 2012 and 29 in 2011. And he bats Righty. I think that would look pretty good in Left field.

  10. 10
    Steve Says:

@9 – Now that is putting the comments section to good use! Thanks, william.

  11. 11
    eric Says:

@8 – A few things make me worry about adding Willingham. 1. The last two years he’s hit righties significantly better than lefties. For his career, it’s around even, but I’d hate to see another fake right-handed bat like Uggla in the lineup. 2. Even more worrisome, he’s getting old and he’s had a history of back problems. Dude plays through a lot of nagging injuries, but he hasn’t been an iron man. Only 140+ games once in the last 5 years. 3. He’s not a particularly good fielder. If we assume Bourn is moving on, the Braves could go from having probably the best fielding outfield to one of the worst, depending on who fills CF. 4. For his career he’s been bad in September and October. Last thing the Braves need is a guy who slumps then. 5. Mostly, I just don’t like idea of picking up a guy who will be 34 before the season starts and coming off a career year, playing the most games he’s played in since 2007. Guys like that always seem to flop for the Braves.

  12. 12
    Shaun Says:

The thing about Julio Teheran that’s easy to forget, because he’s been on our radars for so long, is that he’s still only 21. Not that there are no concerns but Triple-A at 20-21 is a major thing. The average age of players in the International League is 27. Most guys Teheran’s age were in Low A last season. They’ve been aggressive in promoting him probably because he’s proven himself at lower levels. It has nothing to do with him being bored. I suspect his struggles have more to do with him being challenged for the first time and actually facing many guys who could be or have been fringe major leaguers.

I don’t think it’s as big a deal, considering his age, that he spend a third season in Triple-A, as it would be for other prospects. Again, most guys his age are going to be in High-A next season.

That’s not to say Delgado is the wrong choice and Teheran is the right one for the Braves. I feel confident the Braves’ staff will make the right decision. We should just be careful to make definitive judgements about Teheran at this stage. We’re still a good ways away from knowing whether he’s a top-end guy or a bust. We may not know that until his third or fourth year in the majors.

Stupid Fox. Some goofball from American Idol is singing the National Anthem tonight. This is the WS! It should always be a huge name with ties to the city. Metallica should be singing tonight. Or Santana. Or even the Chili Peppers, given their CA ties.

Detroit has Aretha lined up, which is awesome. And here’s someone I thought of a possiblity in Detroit who will NOT be performing.

Can’t believe they beat the V! Just now listened to the show. Always sad to hear the final show. Almost couldn’t bare it. I’m a little disturbed that I feel similar to DOB about throwing trash on the field.

How nice to have multiple options regarding open positions because we have Mr. Baseball himself on our team. Marteeeeeeen!

  21. 21
    Steve Says:

@20 – I thought of you when DOB made a point of going back to the leadership topic to include Prado in there.

  23. 23
    Curt Says:

I’m really going to be depressed if this Giants team wins another World Series. 2 in the past 3 years with that team? And the Braves can’t win a postseason series? Makes no sense.

  24. 24
    ham Says:

I still don’t think Prado is going to work out. I’m Curt-level skeptical about him.

(Just kidding – I actually made my Cubs WS prediction so that my earlier doubt of Prado didn’t look so stupid.)

  25. 25
    Bub Says:

    @23, crap. shoot.

It really, truly is. One day I’m gonna write the definitive article/essay on how baseball postseason is irrecoverably frigged.

It’s a little different when it comes to the Braves’ run of poor playoff showings. I think in that case, bad luck put them in a hole and then the pressure got to them and they couldn’t get out of it. But I don’t think it was some essential high level failure of a team/organization. I don’t think it was Bobby. I don’t think we were “geared for regular season.” I don’t think it was even that other teams were better in the later part of the run (I mean, the point of all this is that it barely matters who’s better in the post.)

  26. 26
    Bub Says:

^ is never going to write the definitive article on anything.

  27. 27
    Curt Says:

All of that might be true. It also means little to me as a fan. All I know is that they (Cards, Marlins, Giants, et al) win, we do not.

  28. 28

@24 Any less obsurd prediction wouldn’t have worked. Well played.

    Steve Says:

And then baseball season was really over. Sweeps are no fun like this. At least give us some drama in the WS.

  35. 35
    Shaun Says:

We hear every year about low ratings for the World Series. How about MLB try to figure out how to make the World Series an event instead of trying to recoup their World Series losses by adding extra playoff rounds?

The World Series isn’t an event if you water it down with 2-3 rounds of playoffs.

    Steve Says:

Anyone upset that the Braves exercised McCann’s option? I heard someone on sports talk this afternoon railing against it (it may have been Archer on 790).

  41. 41
    Shaun Says:

Fangraphs estimates McCann was worth $9M, in free agent dollars, in 2012.

From 2008-2011 he was worth between $18M and $25M in every season.

I don’t think folks realize how expensive wins are on the open free agent market. There’s a very good chance McCann’s option is a steal.

  42. 42
    WatchingBraves Says:

@40- I would… except I don’t see any good alternatives. Certainly production was down. But what would you pay on the market for similar production?

How long would you end up locked in for signing a free agent of his caliber? Braves want to keep options open with Bethancourt coming through the system.

Braves may yet keep McCann long-term or let him walk. But for right now, at this moment this is the most reasonable move.

  43. 43
    David Says:

40 – all I know is that this is probably one of the few times when the words “McCann” and “exercised” have been used in the same sentence.

  44. 44

  52. 52
    Mark in Memphis Says:

    @5
” IMO, you trade either Delgado or Teheran before Minor. We know Minor can do it. We think Delgado can but we’re not certain and who knows about Teheran anymore”

Amazing that as late as the All-Star break, that would have been exactly the opposite…

  53. 53
    Tcc Says:

Schafer..really??? Does this mean the Braves are giving up the idea of keeping Bourn? Yes, Bourn tailed off offensively in the second half but is Schafer able to match Bourn in any category?

    Say it ain’t so…

  54. 54
    David Says:

Haren traded to the Cubs. No wait, not traded to the Cubs.

Not often that, twice (or more) in a year, you see a team have trades reported and “confirmed” only to later learn they’re not going through. With the Cubs, first it was Dempster, now they’re on the other side of things with Haren (although this one’s different cause there’s not a no-trade clause involved here). Cubs are reminding me of the Braves’ 2009 offseason (Peavy, Burnett, Furcal, Griffey).

  55. 55
    Nate Says:

I actually don’t mind the Schafer addition if it’s strictly for a backup role such as defensive replacement/pinch runner. The drop off from Bourn to Schafer as a starter would be awful. He’s a 3-tool bench player. He needs to focus on being just that because he can neither mentally or physically handle being an everyday player.

I really hope the initial reports that the Giants are not bringing back Pagan are true. I think he fills our team needs for CF perfectly.

  56. 56
    Nate Says:

Do we have Reed Johnson locked up for 2013 or is he a FA? Would like to see him back, just wasn’t sure on his status.

Also, any chance we can move Uggla? 13 million dollars is a lot of money for what he does.

  57. 57
    Steve Says:

@56 – Reed Johnson is a FA, but DOB has said the Braves have interest in bringing him back.

Moving Uggla seems very unlikely given the money he’s owed. I mean, would you pay $13MM a year for him?

And has everyone seen the reports that Schafer is solely for OF depth? He’s not the answer in CF.

  58. 58
    Steve Says:

@57 – what I meant was the the Braves have confirmed he’s not the starting CF, he’s only been acquired for OF depth. This has been confirmed.

  59. 59
    Steve Says:

Also (and most importantly) – MOVIE REVIEW! Saw Wreck It Ralph today. It was excellent. Much more going on in it than the typical kid junk. Smart and funny.

  60. 60
    Walker Says:

This is the first time in my life where I was glad we are in the offseason. MLB has put a bad taste in my mouth. I see why the NFL and NBA are byspassing MLB. Did anyone read about the World Series ratings? Horrible. If a die hard baseball fan like me feels this way imagine what others are thinking.

  61. 61
    Curt Says:

Also saw Wreck It Ralph. Very entertaining. Especially if you spent hours in the mall arcade, as I did.

Love that the big story coming out of the Dome last night to ESPN was the fact that the Cowboys are 3-5. 3 minutes on the Falcons being 8-0, 30 min on the state of the Cowboys.

    I hate ESPN

  62. 62
    Frigatedoc Says:

    Curt,
You are right…on Mike and Mike they acknowledged that they were indeed guilty of giving the Falcons no love for a undefeated season….and RIGHT after that, they said “now about the Cowboys….”

I saw “Wreck it Ralph”….my kids loved it. I LOVED the premise of the movie…..the retro aspect of it. It started great, bad middle, but good ending. I thought the “candy” racing game was too much like the board game “Candyland.”

  63. 63
    David Says:

FWIW, this morning on ESPN Ron Jaworski (one of the football analysts on ESPN) answered “yes” to the question, “are the Falcons the best team in the NFL right now?” He also had picked Dallas to beat Atlanta.

I tend to agree with much of what I’ve heard concerning the Falcons: that until they play well in the playoffs, it’s all for naught. The Falcons have been playing good to very good football all season, especially the last two weeks when they’ve looked very strong. I’m looking forward, though, to seeing how well they’ll do against good teams – New York on Dec. 16 in particular.

  64. 64
    Curt Says:

Yeah, Giants is a big game. I think this week against NO is big too. They have struggled against NO the past few years. Be good to beat them in NO and bury them even further.

  65. 65
    David Says:

Agree that Sunday’s game against NO is a big one. Brees has been solid all year, but I’m pretty confident in the Falcons in this matchup. They’ve had two games in a row where lots of pundits were picking against them, and with the exception of the defense letting opponents back in late in the game, they’ve looked very efficient. Need to keep that going.

So when are y’all gonna start your weekly Falcons podcasts? I’d like to hear someone (cough cough Steve cough) predict a Falcons victory by 100 one of these days.

  66. 66
    Curt Says:

Teams checked in about the availability of Brian McCann before the Braves exercised his $12MM option for 2013, Olney reports. The Braves would have wanted a decent return in a trade, but other teams were looking to acquire the catcher cheaply.

Some Atlanta executives are realistic about their chances of signing Michael Bourn. It doesn’t look like the center fielder will re-sign with the Braves.

    Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/olney-on-bonderman-braves-haren.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook#l6oS6mRptcjdAxHx.99

  67. 67
    Steve Says:

@65 – David, the weekly podcasts will start back up in March. For now, we’ll record shows as signings and trade dictate.

  68. 68
    Shaun Says:

I’m thinking the Braves might go after the best all-around centerfielder they can find that fits their budget (perhaps BJ Upton) and they’ll go with a short-term, inexpensive solution in left (perhaps a Torii Hunter), if they feel Gattis is for real as a solid major league leftfielder. Just my theory. What type of moves they make could tell us how they feel about Gattis.

Also, Argo was a very good movie. I saw it this past weekend.

  69. 69
    Walker Says:

I know people want Josh Willingham but his defensive skills are horrible. He would have to really continue to perform well offensively at age 34 for it to really make sense we get him. I wouldn’t do it. I don’t trust him. Especially after hearing that the Twins want Julio Tehran.

  70. 70
    David Says:

So now that marijuana is legal in Colorado and Washington, how soon do y’all think it will be before Jordan Schafer demands a trade to the Rockies or Mariners?

  71. 71
    Walker Says:

The question is how soon until the whole country legalizes pot? Sooner rather than later I hope. We could sure use the tax money. But I’m sure Jordan wouldn’t mind being traded t any of those two states. LOL

  72. 72
    Leah Says:

  74. 74

  75. 75
    will Says:

Curt/anybody – what are your predictions for the Falcons this week at NO? High scoring game but still 9-0…

  76. 76
    David Says:

I say Falcons, 35-31. Considering that everybody is predicting a shootout, it also wouldn’t surprise me if it winds up being 13-6 (Falcons winning) or something like that.

I think the Falcons win tomorrow, although if they lose — and this will depend on how they lose (if it’s a close game vs a blowout) — they’re still in great shape looking ahead to the rest of the season. They won’t have the pressure of remaining undefeated, they can assess whatever weaknesses showed up in the loss and make adjustments, etc. I’m a little nervous about Weatherspoon not being in there tomorrow, but they seemed to do fine without him against Dallas (4th quarter lapse notwithstanding).

  78. 78
    Curt Says:

I think this game depends on the start. Falcons have yet to be in a big hole. I think the Saints are playing better and the Falcons always have trouble A. with them, and B. In New Orleans. Something inside of me has this nagging feeling that they lose today. And I think they probably end up losing three or so games this year.

But I also like the way the Falcons play. Not the best in these categories, but just solid throughout the game. So I’ll go Falcons 32-24

  79. 79
    will Says:

woke up just in time to catch that last drive…stuffed at the goal line..so close.

  80. 80
    Curt Says:

Yeah. That game sucked. Michael Turner – 13 carries for 15 yards. I’d rather see Snelling at this point. Think about last year and we couldn’t get a yard against the Saints on 2 occasions. And here we are again.

  81. 81
    Curt Says:

After that Falcons dumpster, went and saw Skyfall yesterday. I will go on record that I love the Bond movies – even some of the absurd ones like Moonraker. Now Timothy Dalton is pretty indefensible, but I think Daniel Craig is second to only Sean Connery as the best Bond. I have found all of his movies to be solid, if not at least highly watchable. Even that second one he did, which was pretty panned.

All of that…I found Skyfall a little slow. It was too long. 2.5 hours. Add 30 min of previews and it makes for an extremely long movie experience. There were moments of high action, Sam Mendes is a talented director, beautiful locales and women abound, it just wasn’t what I wanted it to be. When trailers told me that someone called it the best Bond ever, I had high hopes. But, if anyone ever saw Road to Perdition (also featuring Daniel Craig in a slightly different role) you see how Mendes winds his movie clock. It is all about the journey. And this journey took a little too long for me. I saw Argo on Saturday night and I thought it was tremendous. So if you have to pick, go with it instead.

    Curt Says:

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/braves-turned-down-simmons-for-olt-swap.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

  83. 83
    David Says:

82 — very interesting (assuming it’s true). I’d say that’s the right no-trade — as good as it could be to have Olt at 3B, Wren can’t make that trade when it means giving up on their shortstop of the future. It’d make no sense to fill one hole (which Prado will take care of) while creating an even bigger one.

Just saw that the Blue Jays are eager for starting pitching. Wonder if they’d consider trading either Edwin Encarnacion or Jose Bautista.

  84. 84
    David Says:

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/braves-interested-in-cody-ross.html

Meh. Ross is fine, but he’s not the missing piece by any means. I know that the rumor mill is what it is, and that the Braves tend to play things pretty closely to the vest, but I hope he’s not at the “top of Wren’s wish list” for LF.

  85. 85
    Nate Says:

In case you aren’t watching it flash across the screen every 3 seconds on ESPN, the Blue Jays are about to acquire half of a baseball team from the Marlins.

  86. 86
    David Says:

Wow, that trade is ridiculous. I think the new-look Toronto Marlins just might have a shot in 2013.

Can we trade for Stanton now? Pastornicky, Delgado, Gilmartin, and J Francisco. Make it happen Wren!

  87. 87
    Nate Says:

@86, a 3-4-5 of Heyward, Stanton, and Freeman, now that’s just not fair. (yes, please)

According to the rumor mill (Bowman, and then MLBTR is echoing him), Braves are “targeting” BJ Upton. DOB says they’ve also talked with the Twins re Denard Span.

There are pros and cons to each, and neither seems to be the “perfect fit” — but I think I’d rather have Span. Upton’s HR and SB totals are enticing, but he’s got a lot of knocks on him. Last 4 seasons: never hit above .250, struck out 150+ in each season, low OBP (including .298 last season). He’s also grounded into 13+ DP each of the last 3 seasons. I feel like if we sign Upton, we’re overpaying for a guy who can steal a lot of bases and hits for power when he’s not striking out.

Span also comes with risks — health, not the speedster Minnesota thought he’d be — but he’s got great defensive numbers (1st in AL in range factor last year, 3rd in defensive WAR) and seems to be more consistent. We’d have to give up a prospect or two to get him, but I’m hoping more for Span than Upton at this point.

    Others? What do y’all think?

  94. 94
    David Says:

One more thing re B.J. Upton — he’s not a typical leadoff hitter, and most of his ABs last year came in the 2-hole. The more I think about it, the less I want Upton.

  95. 95
    Walker Says:

BJ Upton has speed and power BUT…… He doesn’t get on base, he doesn’t hit for average, doesn’t make contact, doesn’t play hard everyday, and his defensive WaR has been negative 6 out his 8 years in MLB.

    Frank Wren NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

    Shaun Says:

Upton isn’t an on-base machine but he does just fine for a centerfielder. And he has good pop.

Also, the Trop is a pitcher-friendly park. Upton is young for a free agent. He’s heading in to his age 28 season.

He’s nowhere near the defender Michael Bourn was and is. But he’s been a better hitter. And it’s likely he’ll be significantly better than Bourn on offense for the next 3-5 years, given their ages and skills.

Projecting forward, I think it’s likely that Upton will be the best centerfielder that was available in this offseason’s market, either via trade or free agency. Not much more that you can ask from the Braves than for them to go after the likely best available player at a position they are trying to fill.

Hi all. Just got back from vacation this week and catching up. The Marlins are just ridiculous. We’ll continue to complain about Liberty (and rightly so) but a real live person as an owner is no guarantee.

I like the Braves going after Upton, but he feels like the classic Braves acquisition that will go into horrendous, mind-bending slumps.

So, we were on a cruise this week and Leo Mazzone was on the ship. He was always in a big group when I saw him (all on the first day, never saw him again) so was unable to talk to him. But, I did see that on his upper arm he has a tattoo in the shape of a penant that says “14 Straight”. I thought that was kind of cool.

  122. 122
    Stephen Says:

Not sure how I feel about this move. I think B.J. was the best option out there for center. If the braves are a club where money is not an issue I think this is a good move, but we all know that is not the case. The braves will pay him what they payed Chipper last year. There are so many question marks here, this is a very risky move. I will be really interested to see what Angel Pagan and Bourn get. If pagan gets over 10 mil a year I will feel better about it.

At least we’re not the Marlins!

    Go Braves!

Betting it’s Span, personally. Exciting, young outfield – that strikes out a lot.

  124. 124
    eric Says:

Keith Law calls the Upton deal a win:

“In Upton, Atlanta gets an above-average defender in center with plus raw power and some past history of plate discipline, although he became much more aggressive in 2012 in what I assume was an effort to boost his power numbers as he headed into free agency. Upton can’t touch Michael Bourn’s glove, but he’s less of a dropoff than any other possible successor to Bourn and makes up for the defensive drop-off with his power, although he’s never been able to translate that raw ability — which should produce 30-plus home runs — into performance over a full season, with 2012′s total of 28 his new high.

Upton had been a patient hitter prior to this season, with an OBP of .346 in his five full seasons as a starter before 2012 and walk totals ranging from good to outstanding, so there’s performance upside here if he returns to his old ways of working the count. There is still performance risk with Upton, who’s only had one season, 2007, in which he put all of his offense skills — power, patience and speed — on display at once, but he still has the physical tools and has shown all of those abilities separately over the years since that breakout season.”

  125. 125
    David Says:

Several weeks ago, I wrote on here that I didn’t want the Braves to sign B.J. Upton. Now that they have, I’m slightly more excited about it (probably because it’s an actual free agent signing), but I’m still very cautious about this signing.

I like that he’s entering into the prime of his career, and he has the makeup for a breakout season. I like that he’s (apparently) friends with Heyward, and hopefully that will make him enjoy playing for Atlanta, which will translate into playing well. I like that he’s right-handed, a good base-stealer, and has power.

I don’t like the increasing strikeouts, the low OBP, the drop-off in defense that we’ll get. I don’t like a rather pedestrian OPS for a guy whom we’ll be paying $15 million a year. I don’t like his low walk total. And, I don’t know where he’ll fit in the lineup — definitely not leadoff, not 2nd (Prado), not 3rd (Heyward). I’d say cleanup (hit him between lefties Heyward and Freeman, then hit Mac and Ugg in 6/7), but I’m not sure that’s where he should hit, despite his power potential.

With all of that ambivalence, I thought whoever made the comparison to Adam Jones (I think it’s in the SI article posted above) nailed it. AJ has had potential for a breakout season for years, and only this year did he come into it. Upton seems like a similar kind of player — late 20s, low OBP, power potential, speed, low walks, etc.

I’d LOVE a trade for Span. With Upton, Heyward, Freeman, and potentially Uggla/Mac (assuming they hit like they should), we’ve got plenty of boppers in the lineup — now we need a table setter who has speed and gets on base at a good rate, which Span does.

    Shaun Says:

I really hope the Braves aren’t focused on finding a prototypical leadoff hitter for leftfield. I hope they are looking for the best available leftfielder. 132 — Just saw that. That sucks. Apparently Alex Meyer (the guys the Twins got in return) is one of Nats’ top pitching prospects, but if we could’ve gotten Span for Delgado or Teheran (or Maholm or Hanson?), I think that’s a trade Wren should’ve made.

No I’m glad we didn’t trade Tehran for Span. Maybe Delgado.

  141. 141
    Shaun Says:

Good stuff. Walden gives the Braves a right-handed reliever for high-leverage situations, which was a need. Plus an extra $4 million for a leftfielder (or thirdbaseman, but probably a leftfielder).

Wren could be thinking relatively big for leftfield.

  142. 142
    eric Says:

Wonder what it would take to get Justin Upton? Teheran, Pastornicky, and someone?

  143. 143
    eric Says:

Some (less than promising) info from Olney on BJ Upton:

The peaks and the valleys. His offense comes in bursts, and rival scouts have thought for years that Upton tends to get down on himself. In recent years, the Rays were open to listening to offers for Upton, as he got more expensive, and no team — not the Braves, not some other club — aggressively moved on him.

This whopper investment by Atlanta seems incongruous with how the industry has viewed Upton in recent seasons, and you wonder if the Braves might’ve been better off chasing Chris Young — who was acquired by Oakland from Arizona a few weeks ago — in a deal earlier this offseason. His age (29) and production has been very similar to that of Upton, he’s regarded as a better defensive outfielder, and — most important — he’s owed only $10 million over the next year, with an $8.5 million salary in 2013 and a $1.5 million buyout on an $11 million option for 2014. The Braves probably would have been better off overpaying in a trade for Young rather than assuming the risk of the massive deal with Upton.

But the opinions on Upton are scattered, and an NL evaluator offered a different perspective.

“He is the most talented player in the free-agent market and somebody I think will age well,” the evaluator said. “He is continuing to improve. Most free-agent signings pay players for what they have done, but when you sign Upton, it’s about what he will do.

“On top of that, things in the market are changing. Jonny Gomes just got a multiyear deal with an average annual value of $5 million, while setup guys like Brandon League and Jeremy Affeldt are getting paid between $6-8 million per year. Baseball just signed a new labor deal last year and got a lot of TV money this year. There was value in the Braves’ striking early, before the market really took hold, because some of these contracts may get out of hand.”

  144. 144
    David Says:

142: That’s what I’m wondering, too. I don’t think it’ll be Pastornicky, though — I wonder if Teheran and Nick Ahmed, and possibly another lesser prospect or two.

It’s already been said, but the Hanson trade was clearly a salary dump and hopefully a precursor to another move. What will that move be?

Dream: Trade for Justin Upton — Teheran, maybe Nick Ahmed will satisfy the DBacks’ need for a SS, plus another prospect like Todd Cunningham or someone.

Reality: I think the extra money will make it possible for the Braves to sign Shane Victorino (sigh). He’s apparently looking for somewhere around 3 years, $27 million, and while the Braves could’ve afforded that without the Hanson dump, the move now allows them to sign Victorino and afford raises for the other younger guys.

Dark Horse: Nick Swisher. We’ve heard his name connected to the Braves a little bit (not much, but a little), but it’s always been said that he’ll command a higher salary. An even darker horse would be Josh Hamilton.

  149. 149
    eric Says:

Keith Law on the Hanson deal:

(In short, he said Hanson is a mess and already in decline.)

“In exchange for a player they had to at least be considering a potential non-tender, Atlanta gets back a project reliever in Walden. He throws in the upper 90s with heavy sink, but has below-average command and often has to elevate the ball just to throw strikes, meaning he doesn’t generate the ground balls you’d expect from the scouting report.

His slider is sharp but is just a pitch to keep hitters off the fastball, meaning it won’t be effective unless he can improve his ability to locate his primary pitch.

But Walden isn’t eligible for arbitration yet, with one more year of club control than Hanson has remaining, so Atlanta saves some cash for 2013 and also has more time to try to fix what ails Walden, mostly command, which is more likely than the Angels fixing Hanson’s health issues. I’d much rather have four years of Walden than three of Hanson, and that’s even more true when we consider the greater expense for Hanson, because arbitration values starters more highly than non-closer relievers.”

    Brandon Says:

Hey guys! Sorry I haven’t posted lately but I read and listen to most everything! I’m with Steve on Upton let’s wait and see what moves next to determine if it was a good move. I do have a question for everybody. My first thought when I saw the Walden trade is that our bulpen is so stocked with quality late inning guys that he will be used as a trade chip for left fielder or third basemen. Given his youth and history of closing games! What’s your guys thoughts? However I would love to add another quality arm to our bulpen, I do believe he could be useful to teams like Arizona and San Diego for Upton or Headley.

  151. 151
    Shaun Says:

Steve @137, I’m not so sure the Braves wanted him for leftifield, within the context of all of their other position players. While I think they have solid offense from all the other positions, I don’t think they have enough to pick up the slack of having Span’s offense in leftfield. I suspect they are looking for a legit leftfield bat, a bat that legitimately profiles for leftfield.

That said, the Braves probably could have dealt with Span’s offensive production in leftfield and been okay but I suspect they felt it isn’t wasn’t worth settling if they had to give up on of their top pitching prospects.

The package I was thinking even though I’m not strong in evaluating prospects was Teheran, Walden, Ahmed, and Mejia for either Headley or Justin Upton! Because I don’t believe we should go for a lead off left fielder. Unless it’s Pagan.

  155. 155

@151 – They’d probably have to hope for big bounce-back years from McCann and Uggla to get a Span-like bat in LF. I hope they aren’t hoping that, but I’m hoping that.

Andrew Sisson at Capitol Avenue Club wrote a whole post on Alex Gordon. It seems the Braves are definitely thinking big.

On some level this offseason reminds me of the very late 1990′s and early 2000′s when the Braves were going all out, doing lots of different things, desperate for that second World Series title, although on a smaller scale in terms of money. It has that feel of that period in Braves history in which they acquired Bret Boone, Sheffield, Reggie Sanders, Vinny Castilla, etc. Hopefully a lot of the moves they make this time around will work out better.
