“I know, I know. For many among you, the mention of WAR yields an EGO (eyes glaze over) effect. But I find this stuff fascinating, even as I concede that I don’t always understand it. (Indeed, sabermetricians argue long and hard over the accuracy of defensive metrics.) But I can’t say the advanced analytics regarding Andrelton Simmons contradict what I’ve beheld with these aging eyes. He’s among the very best shortstops I’ve ever seen, and yes, I saw Ozzie Smith quite a lot.
“As for the identity of the Braves’ MVP: My inclination would be the same as yours – Freeman by a landslide. But that’s why I make it a habit to check FanGraphs and Sweet Spot and Baseball Prospectus almost every day. Because I’ve come to realize there’s more to baseball than meets these aging eyes.”
Family homeviewing rec: Blu-ray peeps must own Sleeping Beauty. Even if you only like it a little bit as a film. You won’t believe what it looks like in HD.
It’s comforting that Pixar has tanked so hard since Toy Story 3. The last thing I wanted was a slow death. 11 masterpieces and then sell your soul completely … it’s so clean, such complete closure. It’s the small pleasures in life.
I was worried that Monsters University would be just good enough to bring a pulse back. But then I saw it. That is, I saw thirty minutes of it.
The Planes thing – apparently it is not a Pixar movie. It is a Disney HOME Entertainment movie. It was originally scheduled to be a straight to DVD release, but they got wind it might do well, so they released it. Small budget, decent return = 2 sequels in the making.
If you want to hear some info on the difference in J. Up, listen to the Baseball Tonight podcast for 8/9. The talk is about the BIG jump in J. Up’s swing-and-miss percentage on the fastball from July to August…
I really hope we don’t resign McCann after this season. He’ll be 30 in February and data suggest signing players to long term contracts after this age post steroid era isnt smart at all. With our budget constraints we must concentrate on extending players like Freeman, Heyward and Minor. We already have too much money locked into Uggla and Upton long term. Pay for 20′s not 30′s.
