I hope Bourn plays well enough next year to get traded. The only problem is all the plate appearences he gets for his new team, Atlanta has to pay Bourns contract.

If his option vests I mean.

550 plate appearances for $12M in 2017. One way or another, it simply won’t happen. To be on the hook for that $12M in 2017 negates the even swap of $’s that the Braves achieved in the trade.

If he goes bonkers at the plate next season, then he’ll have value and they’ll trade him at the deadline. And if he struggles, then he’ll platoon (or whatever) and not get near the PAs.

What do y’all think about Alex Gordon? Should the Braves sign him then trade Markakis at the end of 2016? We could extend Maybin and move him to right to make room for Mallex Smith in center. A 2017 outfield of Gordon in left, Smith in center and Maybin in right.

I like Alex Gordon. I’m not sure the Braves should jump at the chance to extend Maybin beyond next season, considering he’s 28 and in this season, his career year, he’s posted a OPS+ of 107. I don’t know that he’s the answer in centerfield beyond next season, and you certainly don’t want to bank on him as a productive corner-outfielder.

With Mallex Smith, I don’t think, quite yet, you want to make drastic moves, giving up talent to make room for him. No need to rush and do something rash, like trade Markakis.

Well it would depend on what you got back for Markakis. Also how Smith plays this September and I’d assume he’d be on the major league roster next year.
