Short term offer for Cespedes. Six year offer for Justin. Utility infielders and pitching reclamation projects get signed.

Just a thought but perhaps the agents for J. Upton and Cepedes leaked the info about the Braves offer/inquiry simply to get more money for their client. Maybe the Braves really didn’t show any real interest but it makes it sound like the player has other offers. Just a thought.

Patrick – I’m guessing that’s close to the truth on Cespedes. Given that Rosenthal reported a 6 year deal was discussed for JUP, sounds like that one got a little farther down the road.

The Braves might have also did their due diligence in case they could, by some miracle, get Cespedes or Justin Upton for a favorable deal so that they could flip either of them for prospects at the deadline. My guess is the goal in acquiring present talent is to use it as either roster filler or currency or both. And given the fact that they did not sign either player, they are only going to add present value if the price is favorable and would make the talent attractive in a trade.

What I can’t wait to watch is this Soap Opera of pitching that will be the Braves prior to the trade deadline. They will be trying to legitimize value for all these reclamation projects. The ideal season has Grilli, Johnson, Chacin, Norris, Perez, Weber generate enough value to drop on trades. There could be enough value there adding to a team’s depth that any team would come off a bat.
