Show #369: Showcasing the Vets vs. Developing the Kids

Vets vs. Kids – who should get more playing time? Errors and Unearned Runs are bad. Jaime and Folty are good.

Mixed review/reaction to this week’s effort from the podcast hosts. A. Garcia has proven he’s a marginal player at MLB but Ruiz has yet to show he belongs either, which won’t be known until Ruiz gets a longterm opportunity so why is Snitker deluding himself that this team is still in playoff contention? Or is the front office calling the shots with them being the deluded ones?
Swanson has had his shot! Why is he still receiving cover for his abysmal play in the field and at bat? I attribute it to denial in its simplest form. Teheran is the model of inconsistency of late but he too, gets excuses made for him. Keep looking for that 15 game winning streak to get the Braves back into contention and worry the Nats? Yeah, that must be the mindset. Good luck with that.

    William A,

I think Ruiz was brought in to fill in for Garcia when he got hurt. And I don’t think they are going to let Ruiz take his job because of injury (unless Ruiz had been absolutely killing it). I think they’ll let Garcia play his way out of an everyday job, and give more and more playing time to Ruiz. If Garcia is still on the roster, they are going to play him until someone forces their hand.

Swanson is 23 and here for the long haul. 91 games at ages 22-23 is just the beginning of his shot. Having him in Double-A or Triple-A and the Braves acquiring some fringy veteran shortstop to hold down the spot does no good for Swanson’s development and, in turn, does no good for the Braves’ franchise. This is not some 18-19-year-old that needs to see more minor league action.

I’m not sure who is making excuses for Teheran. Of course the Braves are going to put the best face on his struggles. They aren’t going to come out and say, “he stinks and we should have traded him.” What good would that do for anybody?

    Good work guys.

I am agnostic on whether to play Garcia or Ruiz. Don’t think it makes much of a difference to the team either way. Now that Garcia is on the DL it makes the decision much easier. But am excited to see Newcombe pitch. Maybe the youth movement will start arriving this year.
