Show #68: Did the Phillies Series Mark a True Turnaround?

The sweep of the Phils:  does it mean anything?  Should we trade Vazquez?  Has Frenchy been benched?  And discussing Bobby’s uncharacteristic moves.

I still have hope in frenchy. i guess im part of that 1%

    Good show.

If D. Lowe can keep it together, I still like our chances.

I still have hope in Frenchy, too. I hope I never see him bat for us again. :)

How are we gonna trade Vazquez for an established bat? The teams who take on 10+ million dollar players at the deadline are typically contenders (i.e. not Washington), and what they give in return is prospects, not their own power bats. Am I wrong? I could be wrong.

I have hope in Frenchy, which is why atlanta should put a package together to send him to Texas for Nelson Cruz, 20 HRs at the break and Josh Hamilton is about to return, Braves could really use his bat, even if we have to give up Vazquez for it. And he’s only making just over 400,000 this year, it’s the perfect situation for the braves.

Sam and Trav – welcome to the site. Thanks for joining in.

So Sam – Are you hopeful just kind of blindly because you like Frenchy and you’re trying to will it to happen or do you see some things that you think are good signs. I ask in all seriousness, because I’d love to share your optimism.

Trav – I love the idea of Cruz (even if, as you say, Vazquez were involved) but I really wonder if Texas would get rid of a league minimum guy with less than 2 year of service. On a related note, I’d stopped paying attention to Andruw, but just saw that he’s hit 10 HRs, has an OBP of .347 and an OPS in the high 8′s. That wouldn’t look so bad in right field either.

Fair fair fair! I feel the turning point and am optimistic about this week. Someone please stand by with a forklift to pick me up if I’m wrong. It was hard losing to the Nats but we can’t win every game and even Eeyore said the last game was an example of great pitching by the Nats. Another great show guys.

    JD Says:

WHAT?!?!?!?! trade Vazquez?!?!?! you people are crazy!! he is the leading K man right now, why in the hell should we trade him?!?! trade Lowe!! he is the one we should trade for another good bat and just work with the starting rotation we will have then

  7. 7
    Steve Says:

JD – I’m with you on trading Lowe. It’s the best case scenario from a performance and financial perspective. But Lowe’s 4 year, 15MM/year deal will be much, much harder to move. Especially with the last month he’s had.

    Anne Says:

Totally stealing from you fellas, I have an office bet going (one Coca-Cola product of choice from the office fridge, served by The Loser tomorrow by means of The Winner’s choosing, including: serving method, serving vessel and general serving aesthetic) as to whether Francoeur will be in the line-up tonight or not. I hope I win as much as I hope the Braves win. Go Braves!

    Bubdylan Says:

Look on the bright side, if Frenchy’s in the line up, at least he can’t pinch hit. *fail horn*

  10. 10
    Steve Says:

Anne – you’ve won! The line up is posted and Frenchy is not on it. It’s a good sign, people.

    Curt Says:

Steve, I think the front office actually said, “Bobby, we’d like to win some.”

I think on the next show we should start pushing for affordable health care and world peace. We’re on a roll.

  12. 12
    Bubdylan Says:

Are you folks really going to stick a fork in Frenchy before Diaz hits his first 0-fer game? I’d like to think the hack-attack is done, but I’m not as optimistic. Right now I sense less French Bench than Matt…. uh… Bat. yeah.

  13. 13
    Bubdylan Says:

Well right on cue, this quote from the AJC:

“Manager Bobby Cox said he would try to get Francoeur back in the lineup Tuesday against the Cubs.”

Also, Frenchy came right near b*tching about. “I don’t make the line-ups” or some noise…

    I. can. not. stand. Jeff. Francouer.

And if Bobby starts Frenchy to satisfy him… on Tuesday, if Matt’s still hitting? He’s incurable and needs to go. I hate when I’m a sucker for thinking Bobby’s grown a pair.

  14. 14
    Anne Says:

Believe it or not…I LOST! I was on the pessimist side, figuring no way would Bobby continue the (alleged) benching. I’m thrilled I lost…it’s just a Diet Coke. Speaking of losing…back to listening to those jerks on ESPM. That is not a typo.

  15. 15
    Anne Says:

(Stupid Girl) Question: why is our (currently) most prolific HR hitter, i.e., McClouth, at the top of the order instead of 2nd, 3rd or 4th, assuming that he’s more capable of hitting a HR, and being there, he’s less likely to have men on base?

  16. 16
    Bubdylan Says:

Anne, because Bobby likes speed at the top so they can…. uh… be fast when they, uh…. stand there at first.

I doubt Bobby has even revisited the issue since McLouth had success those first two games in the one spot.

  17. 17
    Curt Says:

Thank God for the sweep. Otherwise we might be 5 out.

  18. 18
    Steve Says:

So bummed! Seriously – I had to walk away and not even contemplate posting until I took out some frustrations on Boom Blox for a while (it’s a Wii game, btw). Dammit! I’m sick about this loss like I was about that game 3 loss to the Yankees. And, just to rub it in our faces, the Phillies go beserk on the Reds. I also hate to say that we’re 0 – 3 during the French Bench era. Just giving Bobby more ammunition. Sigh.

    Curt Says:

More on the trade stuff from Mark Bradley (expanding on Buster Olney). He makes some nice points.

    Steve Says:

For as much optimism as I had on Sunday night’s show and as much I still want to be in the fair fair fair camp with Leah – I am still very deflated from last night’s loss. That looked every bit like the team that can barely score 2 runs a game that we’ve been fielding all season (not helped by the 0 – 9 from Marteen and Matty). There was life in this team Saturday and even Sunday. I didn’t see much last night.

  21. 21
    Anne Says:

(back to the speed @ top of the order thread) OK, so let me get this straight, Bub…you’re saying that, allegedly, Bobby would rather have speed at the top of the order than plain-old baserunners awaiting a power bat? Every what-if scenario I think about makes my brain hurt. I guess McClouth is a conundrum, since he has speed AND power. Wait, did I just excuse Bobby? I didn’t mean to.

  22. 22
    Kathryn Says:

Did Frenchy stop wearing the lucky undies when he got benched? We haven’t won any of those games. I bet Bobby puts him back in the lineup if he promises to wear them.

  23. 23
    Leah Says:

Bleck (said with tons of slobber under tongue). That’s all I can say.

  24. 24
    Bubdylan Says:

Anne, I really can’t offer any intelligent explanation of Bobby’s placement of McLouth. It’s not the worst choice, really, just b/c so few of our Braves have been able to handle that spot. We just need another power bat. Scooting McLouth down might do a little for our scoring, but not enough. In the meantime, whoever replaces him in the top spot is liable to freak out.

  25. 25
    Anne Says:

Bub – that was as intelligent as any other answer I’d get! …like these guys freak out. The devil, you say. :15 to go…Go Braves!
