Mets got Bay. Working on Zambrano.
My tummy hurts.

Again Bub…picture of child screaming it’s head off.

Forget everything I said. My new expression to Frank Wren:

Why are we upset?
Because the Mets signed Bay?
or
Because we didn’t sign Bay?
I don’t care honestly, Minaya loves to give out expensive vesting options, and I love watching him do it. I give Bay a few months before he starts making them regret that contract. Knowing NY, if he doesn’t go 4 – 4 with 4 HRs in his first game, they’ll tear his head off.

Sorry to have missed so much. Family trip and sick 2 year old, and all.
Bub, I take none of this personally. This whole exercise for Steve, Ham and myself is to generate talk and response, feedback. We all want the same thing – for the Braves to win, and win a championship. There is no doubt in that. We just express it differently. I am more idealistic in that I think they can and should have done more with this off season. There is still plenty of time for them to add pieces and I look forward to Frank filling out this roster. The prospects of Bay and Zambrano playing for the Mets gives me pause, but they have more resources than we do. I accept all that, begrudgingly.
Liberty Media has lots of money and can afford to spend whatever they want. You talk about them dropping payroll when attendance dropped. Attendance did not drop until the 2000 season, long after the days of championships were in the picture. The 1999 team far exceeded expectations by making the WS, and showed it in the sweep. The last championship caliber team was the 98 team. The Braves also still are among the top-5 teams in merchandise behind only the likes of the Yanks, Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers. Another revenue stream.
I don’t know where I’m going with all that, other than to say that working in PR, you have to give people reasons to show up, not the other way around. So it would behoove ownership to make a splash and show people that they are committed to making a championship run, not a WC run. The Glaus thing was met with a huge round of indifference. Not what you want.
I’m hoping that this pitching is as sound as it was last year. That Lowe and Chipper have huge bounce back seasons. That Melky plays solid defense and provides a spark plug in the 7 or 8 hole. That Glaus makes that transition to 1st, hits .280 and 30 homers. And that the end of the bullpen with Moylan is in shutdown mode all season.
DOB has some great stuff on the young arms, including the kid they got from the Yankees, and says that by 2012 we could have an overpowering rotation with JJ and Hanson. I love that stuff.
But I honestly believe the Braves are hoping to compete this year knowing they have two studs in the wings, and are hoping to build around them in a youthful, exciting, and cheaper fashion.
I will be there all season rooting the on and hoping that all the pieces fall perfectly in place.
Keep all the comments coming. This has been great stuff.

I think Chipper can rebound, and maybe Lowe.
We obviously need to accept that Lowe will be in the rotation and try to support him. He seems a bit of a head case, no? Affair, divorce, remarriage, champion, then overpriced petulant albatross underperformer whining about his feelings being hurt…which pisses everybody off…. how can we as fans help him get his head in a better place? Its no surprise Wren couldn’t move him…but we gotta rehab him. It sucks because hes about as old as Glavine when Glavine started his decline.

“Affair, divorce, remarriage, champion, then overpriced petulant albatross underperformer whining about his feelings being hurt…which pisses everybody off….”
Sigh. He is a right dislikable chap, isn’t he?
I’m not so much worried about him this year as the next two. Oy. Things could get very dark in the D. Lowe chapter before it’s done.
Roll Tide.

Curt, thanks for the kind reassurance.

Curt…was that you?? Are you feeling ok?? Just kidding of course. We kid you about your cynicism, but as you say: We all want the Braves to bring home the prize.
I appreciate all the great posts on here.

Lowe just gets better and better. Thanks Will for the enlightenment. What was he saying about mechanics a few weeks ago? It seems the triad thought it was a viable argument. I’ll forgive his personal disgressions if he can throw that leather sphere past Jason Bay.
How many days Tcc?
December 29th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
One thing, Curt; the 1999 team far exceeded expectations by making the WS? They won 103 games that year.
December 29th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
52, give or take a moment!
“The Braves also still are among the top-5 teams in merchandise behind only the likes of the Yanks, Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers.” Curt today.
“Why the heck do I have all this stupid stuff???” Tcc after a bad Braves loss.

I’m going to enjoy Glaus slapping balls over Bay’s head. Maybe even more so than watching Mighty Mac (My new nickname for McCann) ripped ones over Frenchy’s head…

KJ to Arizona?
December 29th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
thats what the Arizona Republic reports
December 29th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
I am sick with wanting and it’s evil and it’s daunting
How I let everything I cherish lay to waste
I am lost in greed, this time it’s definitely me
I point fingers but there’s no one there to blame
Temporary is my time
Ain’t nothin on this world that’s mine
Except the will I found to carry on
Free is not your right to choose
It’s answering what’s asked of you
To give the love you find until it’s gone
December 29th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
They might have won 103 games, but no one expected them to be in the WS that year.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Yes, KJ is close to a deal with ARZ
Curt,
Did you know that in 2005 the Yankees and the Red Sox made up 53% of all of baseballs merchandise sales, that’s crazy!

“They might have won 103 games, but no one expected them to be in the WS that year.”
I did
December 29th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Leah, that’s a great tune. I’m gonna put it on right now.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Anyone know where I can find the top making revenue teams in 2009?
December 29th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
You know, I read that revenue stuff last year. I was completely surprised that the Braves were still so popular nationally. We’ll see how long they can sustain that with the Superstation cutting all their games and their post-season drought. But their unis are still classic, save the beer league softball Sunday red jerseys.
December 30th, 2009 at 12:06 am
Curt,
The majority of Braves sales aren’t from actual Braves’ fans. Wearing the Atlanta “A” is a fashion statement for ghetto people and rappers. All over my school people wear the “A” hats. I, unknowingly thinking they’re Braves’ fans, ask them what they think the Braves should do in the offseason, and they give me the stupidest look. I just roll my eyes and shrug it off. I ran into a guy who has a tattoo of the Braves’ “A” on his wrist, it’s because his name was Allen…
December 30th, 2009 at 12:18 am
Curt, we can agree on the Sunday reds. I wrote a not-so-funny bit on the red uni’s for the DOB blog way back, but I can’t remember much of it.
It ended with “The Braves red uni’s are so bright, the sun said ‘DAMN!’”
